The Unicorn Cafe and Bar (2)

There are a few reasons why I like to dine at the Unicorn Cafe and Bar once, sometimes twice a week, when there are so many other Cafes and Bars in the area. After all, their menu is simple fare, and the food is nothing special.

When it comes to food, I am with Socrates who said, "The rest of the world lives to eat, while I eat to live." However, that aside...

Maybe I am a creature of habits. If I find a place I like, I will keep going back. When I went there for the first time, I felt very at home. I guess it is also because they are British, and language is not a problem. While I will still get fed if I patronise the local cafes with a Spanish word here and there, and lots of gestures, it is troublesome. And when one is travelling, I guess one likes also to be with company who speaks the same language.

The owners Alan and Jan are nice, friendly and witty people. I especially like their sense of humour. A couple of examples of their sense of humour.

Once, there was some racket up the road. Jan went off, and when she came back, she announced, “I am not nosey you know. I just like to know what is going on.”

There was an occasion when customers took the table which the owners usually reserve for themselves. So, Alan had to sit at another table. When he went off to serve the customers, Jan took his seat. Alan came back, found his seat taken, and he turned to us and said. “It’s bad enough that customers take your table, now you have your own staff taking your seat.”

And it is not only the owners that are witty. Their customers, mostly their regulars are also very witty, and friendly too.

One evening, a ring-neck dove, landed on the floor beside a table and one of them remarked, “Ah, tomorrow’s dinner.”

You might say what’s so funny about that. Well you have to understand how humour works, why some works and some doesn’t? Humour works best when it is delivered simply, matter of factly, and most importantly, it must catch the audience by surprise. That is the only way I know how to put it.

I guess with humour – you either have it or you don’t. If you have it, you will see the humour in it. Or maybe it is easy to make this simpleton laugh.

Anyhow, the atmosphere at the Unicorn is always very relaxed and congenial. Customers, totally strangers speak across tables to each other sharing a joke, or an encounter or just commenting about the weather. I like the camaraderie.

I guess that is enough reasons for one to like a place.

Unicorn’s menu – mostly British fare. As you can see, it is a simple menu.
