Attractions of Dalat: #13 The French Quarter

Dalat was of course once ruled by France. Back in the days of colonial rule, the French built large villas in Dalat, as they turned the town into a holiday retreat. The air is cooler here and for Europeans the city gave them a welcome respite from the heat. The French Quarter is easily accessible, it is located to the southeastern corner of the Xuan Huong Lake. In recent years it has become quite popular with foreign tourists.

Not much has changed here since it was built between 1800 and 1920. There are many huge villas and at its heart, two superb Art Nouveau hotels. Staying at the hotels here offers a unique experience. It is a delight to stroll around the area particularly along Tran Quoc Tuan, which runs along the lake shore. Some of the old houses here have become quite run down, but this merely add a bit of charm to the place.
