The Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts is situated on Nguyen Thai Hoc,just across the road from the Temple of Literature. It is located in a French colonial building that was originally a girl’s school, for the children of high ranking officers. It converted to the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts in 1966.
It house a rather impressive collection of paintings, ceramics and of course lacquerware. Some dated from after the war, but others dating back to feudal and even prehistoric times. Sadly many great works were destroyed by American bombs in the war, and have been replaced by replicas.
It is though well worth a visit and if you plan your trip to include the Temple of Literature as well, it makes for a very interesting few hours. Book in advance to have lunch at the famous Koto Restaurant and enjoy a memorable day.
