Today is the Queen’s birthday and the great thing about it is that it’s a public holiday so I get to stay at home 😂.
I’m getting better from what ever I caught on Friday, still not 100% recovered but much better.
After breakfast, I went straight on working on @teamvn, the Vietnamese community bot which had an issue with its registration process. Then I went helping Thien-San, my boy, to clear up the house and put his toys away because we were going to have a visitor coming in the arvo. It’s always when you have guests that you get to clean a house, isn’t it hahahaha.
Then as my wife went to have a shower, I went in the garden collecting some worm compost and fall leaves that I left in a bag to age a little bit and went feed the plants. I gave each containers about 2” of vermicompost and worked it down into the surface of the soil. I’m actually late, should have done it two months ago lol. Oh well, better late than never, they say.
3pm, Pam, our guest, arrived and we had a nice cup of tea. I met Pam as she came to buy some Comfrey plants from me for her backyard. She was amazed by my little garden and my vermicomposting setup. Couple of months ago, she emailed me about an open day at a local eco-village. I went there with the family as a weekend day out. It was nice to see the probject. I even got to bump into an former colleague from London who I didn’t see for about about 10 years. The world is small!
At 4pm, I took the boy to his martial art class. We were early and San got to do some warm up exercise before the other kids. Here he did hand stand against the wall for 30 seconds.
6.15pm it was my turn. So I went to my friend and colleague’s place to pick him up as he has recently joined the class to my suggestion. I too my Didgeridoo with me cuz he likes the sound of a Digeridoo but never got to use one. I will have to teach him one day.
Back in Uni days, I used to do some Shaolin Wu Shu and got to only blue belt before I broke my right wrist, like completely broke broke the two bones. That was a major accident during roller blading and still until now I have few trouble with it and I don’t have full control on my right thumb anymore. That’s when I decided to go and look for a internal martial art and found Wing Chun. But it seems like there is is always something between me and that martial art. I totally love the principle and got to learn it quick but every few months after joining a school, there was a major change in my life and I had to move country or town. I happened three times. Now that I have settled in Wyoming, NSW, Australia, I was out of luck as there is no school close enough.
Few months ago, I went online and looked again and out of no where, I found this very small and humble school teaching a martial art I never heard about and there’s is almost nothing about it on the internet: Wu Xing Dao Kung Fu. It’s mix of multiple styles: Mian Quan, Tai Chi Quan, Meihua Quan and Baguazhang. Both styles are internal styles, relying on energy rather than force.
I gave it a try and enjoyed it. It does have some physical training which will make you sweat which is what I needed because years of stopping all sort of activities started to make my body feel weak.
Lucky for me, my experience with other form of martial arts is helping me absorb this one quicker. Although, I’m not great at any martial arts cuz I’m doing it more for the art and health than for the martial side of it. I’m lacking the combat mentality. But isn’t that what martial art is for? Internal balance, self confidence, health, self defence all by trying to avoid conflict when possible?
Tomorrow, back to reality...
