ULOG 017 - Native stingless bees or a pedal drive kayak?

I'm on a rest day and working from home tomorrow, back to the office on Thursday and Friday and 4 nights in a row from Saturday, that's 7 days straight. Anyway, last night shift has totally messed up my body clock and I woke up after just 4 hours of sleep and still can't get back to it. Really looking forward to seeing this World Cup ends ASAP.

I'd like a new fishing kayak

The photo above is my offshore fishing kayak. It is an RTM Tempo 4.5 meters long Kayak. I rigged it up with DIY mods such as fishfinder mount, PVC rod holders etc... The farthest I went on this Kayak is 8-10 km offshore with a mate on a calm day. I haven't had luck with offshore fishing yet, still have to improve my fishing finding skills.

At 4.5 meters, it is a rather long kayak for a single seater but it only weighs 27 Kg which is awesome for me as I can easily put it on the roof rack of my car. It is also narrow so it can cut through the waves easily allowing me to launch from the beach cutting through the wash. It's length also reduce the shake and make it a more comfortable ride.

Last year, I tore my shoulders rotator cuffs and still haven't fully recovered yet. So this Kayak is collecting dust in the garage. I'm missing fishing on the water but I need to wait. It's has been much better for the last few months with my martial art training where we do some shoulder stretching etc... So I might take it out one weekend for a trial. However, if it's not getting better then I will need to find an alternative.

So I have been looking at multiple options.

Stealth Profisha 475

The Stealth Kayaks are beautiful fiberglass Kayaks made in South Africa. They are built for the rough SA sea and are both lightweight, stable and super fast. Being fast also means I can go at a decent speed without forcing with my arms and shoulders. But there are two issues still:

  1. I still have to rotate my shoulders and might get more injury
  2. It costs a lot of money: A$3250 new and about A$2500 second hand if you are lucky

Hobie Mirage Revolution 13

The Revo 13 is a 4 m Kayak and suitable for both inshore and offshore fishing. It is less easy to launch from the beach but not impossible. Being a pedal drive, this means I use my legs to power the kayak and have the hands free for fishing. No stress to the shoulder.

It is also an expensive Kayak but I can probably find a second hand one or a Hobie Outback for between A$800 - A$1700.

Pedalfish 13 Pedal Kayak

This is one of the less expensive pedal kayaks on the market at A$1500 new. It seems quite decent though. And using propellers, it allows you to pedal backward and bring the kayak to a stop and reverse without reverting the pedal drive. I'm not sure how it will handle offshore conditions but almost 4 meters long it should still be OK.

Native stingless bees

This photo was taken by Peter O.

In a previous post Saving for an Australian stingless beehive I wanted to save some SBD to buy a Stingless Beehive to help the garden and also sustain the population of bees. I still want to do so, but I'm just not sure when. A stingless beehive costs around A$500 and requires maintenance. Being now more and more busy with Steem projects, will I have enough time to care for them properly? I also have my compost worms and black soldier fly larvae to care for, so it might be wise to postpone this, I'll have to think about it.

That was what I was thinking of and looking around on the web today. I have been thinking of both the bees and kayaks for over a year now and still haven't made my mind just yet and mainly because of the cost. By selling the offshore kayak and few other things, combined with the SBD when the price will go back up, I should be able to get myself a decent one with pedal drive. That would be some nice source of material for blogging!
