Today my son had a little event at school where he gets to do some scientific experiment. He needed to dress up as a mad scientist. So his mum went in my cupboard and took one of my white shirt and tie to dress him up 🤣
I went there at 12 noon with my wife to see him and we ended up giving a hand to the teachers along with other mums. I was the only father there today. There were four workshops each of them teaches the kids about something. On the photo above, Thien-San was to make some slime.
I was assigned to the lava lamp workshop, we had to use oil, water, food colorant and Alka Seltzer tablet to make a lava lamp effect. The recipe was:
- fill a plastic bottle with 2/3 of vegetable oil
- fill the rest with water and leave about one-inch gap
- add few drops of colorant, it will take a while for the colorant to reach the water and color it
- once the water is colored, add 1/3 of an Alka Seltzer tablet and watch the effect.
I was helping with the food colorant and you can tell I have a lot of experience with food colorant by the next photograph 🤣
Don't shake the bottle, although it will be faster to mix the color, but the effect will not be the same:
What you need to do is tap the bottle on the sides until the color get through the layer of oil and then add the tablet:

Cool heh?!
Later on in the afternoon, I went to my mate's place to give him a jar of milk kefir with some grains and showed him how to make some more. Milk Kefir is a homemade probiotic yogurt that you can easily make in 24-48 hours by just dropping some milk kefir grains in the milk and let it sit somewhere dark. Super easy. I might make a video soon.
Then in the evening, we went together with his parents to Patonga beach to try catch some squids. We were lucky tonight, I caught 5 squids, his mum caught about 3 or 4, my mate caught a few too. In the end we had caught a good dinner for tomorrow:
Autumn/Winter time is my favorite season to go catch squids, they are big now after feeding during the summer season. A nice thing is you get the whole wharf for yourself as there are much less fishermen during this cold season.
My wife prefers eating squids to eating fish so she is always happy when I bring back some for cooking. She'll be very happy tonight when she'll see the catch.
Those are arrow squids, they don't grow very big but you can get some that get to around 30 cm long. For larger squids, we will probably go to Terrigal this weekend on a kayak and target some green-eye squids.
I still haven't managed to re-adjust to normal working hours yet, I feel like jetlagged. Those night shifts alternances were like taking the plane to go from Australia to Europe three times in less than two weeks. It's draining. I feel dizzy in the morning and it gets better in the evening.
Anyway, I will try to sleep early and wake up early.
