A Spanish Restaurant - Meson la Mezquita

I had the occasion to dine in a real Spanish restaurant. My friends and I went to this little Spanish restaurant tucked away on a small side road. I was told it was very popular. So, when we arrived at 8 pm, I expected the restaurant to be busy, but we were the first customers. It seems that the Spanish eat their dinners quite late.

This is the restaurant - Meson la Mezquita

As you can see from the picture it is only a small restaurant. Inside the restaurant there's a bar counter, and about four or five tables (depending how they are set). Outside the restaurant, there are three tables. However, if they gets busy, which I was told, is often the case, they put up tables across the road in the back alley.

And this is their daily set-menu.

I had this. It was highly recommended by my friends. (I remembered to take pictures this time.)

Chicken wrapped around bacon and dates served with mushroom sauce, chips and white rice. It was delicious.

This pork dish was as it looked - dry, tough and not the best.

This fish dish, not much to look at – but I was assured was ‘rather good’.

The dish of prawns looked rather oily. But I was told it was good, and supposedly a Spanish dish called ‘Gambas pil-pil’ which translates as Chilli prawns.

This is a dish of egg-plant served with sweet dark sauce. I don’t know if it was stir-fried, or deep fried. But this is certainly the first time I've eaten egg-plant with sweet dark sauce. I prefer my egg-plant stir-fried with sambal chilli.

And the house red we had was so lovely, we had to have another bottle. Too bad that I didn’t take a picture of that.

Anyhow, that was my first experience in a local Spanish Restaurant. I tried to find out what, on the menu, are authentic Spanish dishes, but it would seem that the restaurant serves a fusion of dishes rather than Spanish dishes. I guess that is not surprising. Benalmadena is quite multi-national, and the food is bound to be fusion to appeal to all.

Well, it was a very pleasant evening out. The food was good, the wine and the company were simply excellent. Good food, good wine, good company – that’s what holidays are all about isn’t it?

And as a testimony to their popularity, by the time we left, they were rapidly filling up.
