Epiphyllum Oxpetalum - "Queen of the Night"

The latest bloom of my ‘Queen of the Night’ flowers. Since I was away, my sister took them to show me, knowing I am always pleased to see the blooms.

The flower buds begin to bloom in the early evening and is fully opened by midnight. The flower has got a very strong, pleasant fragrant. It smells really nice. Unfortunately, the flower does not last long. It starts to fade and die off almost immediately after full bloom. By morning the flower is dead. I guess that is why it is nicknamed ‘Queen of the Night.’

This is early evening when the flowers are beginning to bloom.

When I first planted it, they were two dying branches which a neighbour had discarded. I did not expect them to survive. They were dried out, and looked very dead to me. But I knew they were hardy things, so I thought I would stick them in the pot anyway, and see what happens. Not only did they survived, they grew to be healthy plants and have blossomed many, many times. At times, it was just the one or two flowers, and other times five or six will bloom at the same time. I am very pleased.

Have a look at an earlier video I did – if you are interested.
Queen of the Night
(I was told it is wrong to use the word 'pungent' to describe the fragrant of the flower. What I meant was that the flower has got a very strong, pleasant fragrant. It smells really nice.)
