(Tharnday, cont.)

By lunchtime, Tirry had only worked out the basic design, the obvious and easy parts. She felt a bit frustrated that she was struggling so much. Maybe she was still just tired.

Yewan came in and sat next to her. “Here is some lunch,” he said putting a plate of sandwiches between them.

“Thank you,” she said.

“It’s looking good so far, Tirry. Yet, I sense you are struggling,” he said. “Maybe I can help.”

“I would be grateful if you could think of how we should do a water feature. It needs to be safe enough for Arvad, but still invigorating and refreshing,” she said.

“Come, let me show you my ideas,” he said, grabbing a couple of sandwiches and indicating Tirry should do the same.

She followed him to the rooftop, nibbling on a sandwich. He started at the corner nearest the penthouse. He looked at one of the freshly-curtained windows for the suite. “Right here,” he began. “We put a waterfall feature. There has to be a small pool, where we can put some fish. But we can put a grating over that to protect Arvad from stumbling into it and protect the fish from birds...”

“We have to heat it a little to keep it from freezing in the winter,” Tirry said practically. “We can put plants all around it too. You can see the waterfall from your bedroom window every morning or whenever you feel the need.” She was seeing it now. “A second pool, with the water running over the rocks to it, with smaller fish. We can have a couple of benches around the upper pool for relaxation, a small picnic spot next to the lower one.”

“I like it.” Yewan said, nodding. “But that’s not the end of the water… we have it run a small course across the roof to a small paddling pool at the other corner. It will include a gate to prevent accidents. Along the course, it will have to be well-planted, and maybe fenced again to keep Arvad out of danger.”

“A nice little bridge over it too. I think it will be lovely!” Tirry said enthusiastically. “I’d better finish with the design now.”

“I hope I was able to help,” Yewan said as they left the rooftop.

“Enormously,” she replied, her emotions overflowing once again. She wondered for the hundredth time if she was wisely investing her heart, but she couldn’t help it. She tried not to be so curious about Yewan’s penthouse project, but figured it was just because it was private, and he wanted to guard that – reasonable. She shouldn’t be so nosy.

She went back to working on the plans. She loved how it was coming together. She couldn’t wait to start building.

Towards the end of the day, Yewan came back in and sat next to her again. “You should take a break. Long hours aren’t good for you.”

“It feels good to work on this,” Tirry said. “You already know I have no family here, Jenna isn’t available much right now, so I may as well work here.”

“Let’s at least go eat then,” Yewan persisted. “I’m sure I still owe you for all you have done for me.”

“You don’t owe me anything,” she insisted, going with him anyway.

“I hear the elections went well despite the errors,” the Curator said in the customary scrambled voice.

“The errors had nothing to do with me. I’m sure you’re well aware of that fact, Mestari. But we have the win, and although the A’mara found the planned problem, they have no idea that there was so much more to this election. With the TFP in almost every office, the Governor isn’t going to be able to do much to help the A’mara now,” Wolf replied. “It will still be our projects that get the attention.”

“It sounds like you have managed this event quite well,” the Curator replied sounding quiet pleased. “How does it feel to be the Gaskarii #1?”

“It’s not like I have much competition here, but it definitely sounds good!”

“Keep your little group running and the #1 will become more significant. With the increased A’mara interest, we should ensure we keep up. You may continue running the show in Gaskarii as long as you do the job justice.”

“Thank you, Mestari,” Wolf replied.

The communication ended.

Wolf looked at Ydia. “Yes!!!” he shouted. “I feel like celebrating!”

“Thank you for the lovely evening,” Tirry said as they reached her apartment.

Yewan felt her longing. She would not cross the boundary to kiss him as impulsively as she wanted to. He felt bad not giving her what she wanted – what he wanted as well. Waiting a little longer was part of his plan. It was good for both of them to long and wait a little longer, he insisted to himself.

“I think tomorrow we need to purchase what we need for that rooftop garden so we can start building,” Yewan said. “It needs to all be in place by the time planting time arrives.”

“That sounds great!” Tirry said. “I am excited for what that rooftop is going to look like by the end of summer!” She was so excited about the project. She was excited about working with him too, being near him. But she tried so hard to keep her feelings under control – just like an A’mara, he realized. Her lack of training showed, but only on the inside. Yewan couldn’t help but admire the composure she showed on the outside. So calm despite her personal feelings.

“Good night,” he said as he closed the door. Even through the door, he felt her longing burning as intensely as his own. He almost turned back knowing she’d let him stay if he asked. It took all his training to resist. He needed to stay this course. But he needed to hurry.

He hurried through the cold back to the Complex where he quickly went to the penthouse. He looked around determining what was required and what could wait a bit longer. He worked on mounting a piece of plasterboard.

Yewan had felt her emotions bubbling over all day, from the moment he’d found her wearing his cloak. Yes, it had been chilly and that was one of the reasons she’d put it on – she hadn’t planned on spending the night in the Complex after all. But she was relishing feeling him with her. She was wearing it because she loved him. He had even felt where her lips had touched the neckline, and had felt it all day long. Her scent had mingled with his.

Yes, he had teased her about acting like an abári when telling him about a healthy breakfast, but he realized that he loved her for it. She had no qualms telling him what to do – no fears that just because he was abári, she had to treat him a certain way.

Yewan worked hard to get the remaining pieces of plasterboard up. Then, he got the layer of primer paint on so that it could dry. He looked at the other buckets of paint – mixed to match the exact shade that Tirry had used in her apartment.

Finally, in the wee hours, he stretched out on his little section of floor downstairs and slept soundly, his exhaustion overtaking any discomfort of the hard floor.
