(Silnaday)
Tirry arrived at the Complex early, as had become her habit.
Lataya let her in again. “I take you to library again,” she said. “Rest of us paint today! We move Tle-sun and Jenna and baby tomorrow.”
“Wow! I’m excited! I can’t believe it’s done already!” Tirry replied as they reached the library.
“Not done, but enough,” Lataya replied. “I go home to Irola tomorrow. I miss you.”
“I will miss you too,” Tirry replied.
“Complex in good hands wid you,” Lataya said then left before Tirry could reply.
Tirry sat down and started looking at the blueprints for the Complex building. She also looked at the list of requirements that Yewan had put together for her. She found a Complex schematic on holonet to help her know what kinds of dimensions were typical in the A’mara buildings. She found that the building in Avicen was similar enough to be used as a base idea.
She realized that Yewan’s grand tour ideas were going to be changing a bit. She hoped he wouldn’t mind too much, but she also figured that the plans that worked elsewhere were likely to work here as well.
There was, however, a small issue of what Yewan was doing with the penthouse. Was he using it for himself after all? It would make a difference in how she designed the upper floors. Or she could just make them flexible like she had done for the family housing. Then, it didn’t matter. Yes, that seemed practical.
Yewan came down around lunchtime.
“Good color,” Tirry complimented, seeing blue paint on his hands.
“Thanks,” he replied blushing slightly.
“I didn’t know A’mara blushed,” she replied. “I’m also not sure how I did that.”
“It’s okay,” Yewan replied. “See, it’s gone again.”
“I wish I had that much control over the color of my cheeks!” Tirry replied.
“I hope I don’t give you too many reasons to blush,” Yewan said.
Tirry couldn’t help thinking of all the ways he had made her blush. The color threatened her cheeks just thinking about it.
“Anyway, I wanted to see what you were doing,” Yewan said sitting close to her.
“I was looking at plans from some of the other Complexes to see what they did. I figure that it’s a good place to start,” Tirry said. “See, the building in Avicen is very similar to this one. It can be used as a model, I think.”
“Good thinking,” he said. “It’s been a long time since I was in that building. I think you are very right that it’s a perfect model. It’s probably what I was unwittingly envisioning in the first place.”
Tirry smiled again.
Betel came in with pizzas and handed one to Yewan.
“Thank you!” he said placing the plate on his knees and offering some to Tirry.
“Thanks!” she said. “All this work around me makes me hungry!”
“Don’t underestimate the energy drain of mental work!” Yewan said. “Show me what you’ve been working on.”
She showed him the plans she’d found and the adaptations she’d made.
“This is Governor Sandy. I was just looking for some assistance on a major project here in Loxos that stands to benefit the poorest among us as well as ensuring peace for everyone..,” Sandy said into the PCS unit. “Oh, I see. As long as it’s not the A’mara building… What about the project for needy families that they are doing? You think the Neví have that covered? Okay.”
Sandy called another number and had a similar reply. She felt frustrated. “I don’t need lots of people, I just need a couple,” she encouraged herself and kept going.
“I work on Silnaday because people are still homeless on Silnaday,” Sandy defended during another call. “The building will house another 60 people of very low income, from those fresh off the street to some of the working poor of Loxos. Yes, we are willing to name your church on the board of sponsors and allow your scriptures and reading materials in the shelter library – can we count on your help? Thank you, so much!”
Sandy sighed with relief. Maybe she could do what she promised after all.
“I hear that the governor is canvassing for financial support of the A’mara project,” Ydia said to Wolf that evening.
“As long as she’s not using public funds to encourage them, she can do what she likes on her own time.”
“She will eventually find enough support to get the Complex built,” Ydia predicted.
“Possibly, but this will keep her out of our way and let Daegal become a greater influence first. Paves the way for me to get involved – maybe I can be his auxiliary first..,” Wolf said thoughtfully. “Let’s not make ourselves work where there is nothing to be done.”
At the Complex, there was plenty of food and music that evening in celebration of everything that had been accomplished that week. Yewan paused the music with a wave of his hand. He cleared his throat.
“We’re here tonight to recognize our combined achievements this week,” he began. “Firstly, we managed to run successful elections, despite valiant attempts to thwart them. Everyone here gets credit for their part. Come here, Tirry.”
Tirry stood next to him, already blushing. “I’m sorry to make you blush, but your work needs to be recognized by our community. Tirry has single-handedly completed the designs of these buildings. I will submit them to our architect on Muranaday. I am very much in her debt for all that she’s done for us. She will continue to be a huge part of our Complex as the Director of the Family Project! As such, I have asked her to remain to celebrate with us tonight.”
An enthusiastic clap circulated the room. “Okay, you can sit down again,” he said looking at her tenderly and feeling her love rise again.
“Furthermore, we’ve completed the Orivesk quarters and will be moving them in tomorrow!” Yewan continued. “All these things have happened because we’ve come together as a community of A’mara! Those around us will see what we do together and know that being A’mara means something!”
“Betel has been approved to remain here with us to help get this Complex up and running, even if we cannot get further help from the governor and her team.”
“Finally, even in the most wonderful community, some things must come to an end. Tomorrow afternoon, we must say ‘good-bye’ to three of our friends. Mikor and Garian will be returning to Kasago. Lataya will return to Irola. I think I can say for all of us that we will miss you three very much and we hope that you will come to visit soon!”
“Tonight, however, we will spend enjoying the company of our community,” Yewan completed with a wave of his hand to restart the music.
“Well said, Abári!” Mikor shouted in support.
Jenna was happy to accept a hug from Tirry for the first time in days. “How are you doing?” Tirry asked.
“We’re doing well. The stella says Arvad is feeding perfectly. She has no worries for us,” Jenna replied. “How about you?”
“I’m enjoying my work,” Tirry replied.
“Sounds like you’ve made quite an impression on Yewan!” Jenna said.
Her face clouded a moment. “I don’t understand how I love him so much, yet...” she drifted off.
“He hangs around you so much though – surely you’ve seen that!” Jenna said encouragingly.
“Yes, but...”
“Hang in there, my friend!” Jenna replied smiling meaningfully at her as Yewan approached them. She wished so much that she could put Tirry out of her misery, but Yewan had sworn her and Tle-sun to silence. She hoped it would not be much longer, she did not like seeing her best friend suffering.
