Yezi’tra, Yezi’im – A’mara Complex Conference Chamber
“This is Kri’enden Daily News, reporting news across the continent. The news that matters to you,” the anchorwoman introduced.
“Today’s headline: Are Kri’enden and Yezi’im about to go to war again? Here is tribal expert, Pat Brook,” the young woman said, sitting on a couch with a man of fairer complexion. “Pat, are we about to go to war?”
“I think maybe the headline is a bit sensational, to be fair, but it could happen if our two countries don’t take more care to settle the disputes along our border.”
“Tell us more about these disputes. How serious are they?”
“I’m sure most of your viewers are aware that the Yezi are the main tribe of Yezi’im. Of the various bands, the Yeziling are the largest and have many descendants who live in Yezi’tra and other cities. Similarly, the Zley are one of the largest bands of the Kri’enden, and inhabit the upper reaches of the River Zley which is the main tributary of the River Joton. As with the Yeziling, many Zley descendants live in Joton and other cities of Kri’enden.
“At it’s most basic, the disputes are minor. We’re talking about little bits of land, livestock, even the occasional worker,” Pat said. “Not something akin to full-scale war.”
“So, what’s different this time?” the hostess asked.
“What’s different is the fact that people are now betting on the outcome of the disputes. This brings in many more people than have ever been involved before. Not to mention the fact that there is a new level of national pride. Maybe it’s like a sports match, but maybe it will escalate into something more. It’s anyone’s guess.”
“What efforts are being made to bring peace to our border?” the hostess asked.
“The Chief Councilors are already planning a meeting along with some of the A’mara from both of our countries. They hope that they might be able to defuse the situation somewhat,” Pat answered.
“Thank you for your time. Tribal expert, Pat Brook.”

Yezi’tra, Yezi’im – A’mara Complex
Oberti Perton turned off the news and looked at his gathered A’mara. Everyone present had the very dark skin of the Yezi. Some had distinctive reddish tinge to their hair, but largely the darkness masked the most obvious A’mara trait.
“This is why we are going to be hosting a meeting here. I still have to finalize arrangements with Kivana, but I want to address this as soon as we can. Se-orna and I both spent time in Joton and know the Kri’enden to be loving people, not unlike the Yezi. We want to promote peace in our region,” Oberti said as he sat next to his wife. “It is our hope that involving our two groups together can help find a solution that both the Yeziling and the Zley can live with.”
“We could encourage cooperative classes to learn skills,” Benjan suggested. “I can do the desert survival class, of course. Although all Yezi learn these skills, I doubt many of the Kri’enden learn them. They would benefit just as much due to our proximity.”
“That’s a good idea, Benjan,” Se-orna replied. “Perhaps some of the canyon bands would share some of their farming techniques, or the coastal bands share their strategies for dealing with lots of salt, like the Yezi must.”
“Education is a good approach,” Oberti agreed with Benjan.
“I could help,” Tsia volunteered.
“My course is already written,” Benjan excused.
“I’m sure you can write another course, Tsia,” Oberti soothed. “The more we work together, the more likely we can find a path to peace.”

Joton, Kri’enden – A’mara Complex
“I hope that news article brings you mostly up-to-date with the situation here,” Kivana said to the Varkevanders in the room. Their paler skin made a welcome contrast to the dark skin of the Kri’enden tribes.
“Yes, is much clearer. Tank you, Abári,” Moxara said respectfully in her Varkevander accent.
“I also have an update on the Council of Peers. You might be aware that following the problems we had last year, that once again, it has been introduced into the Council of Peers that they restrict the autonomy that the A’mara have enjoyed for generations. Rather than trying to do something about the elections fraud that’s been rampant throughout the world recently, they would hamper our ability to investigate and bring justice and peace to our planet.” Kivana sighed her frustration.
“How serious is the debate?” Gaetan Rookley asked.
“It’s hard to say,” Kivana replied. “The proponents claim they have a lot of support. Whether it’s enough momentum to carry the bill is another question entirely. The fact is, wherever there are elections, there’s been fraud in recent years, and now, there’s another upcoming election in Atrua. We have no one there right now and sending anyone officially could cause further problems for our cause in Irola.”
“Sorry I’m late!” Sheena said entering the room and sitting in a spare seat in the back.
Kivana nodded acknowledgment.
“I could go to Atrua,” Sennon Tyrril volunteered.
“You will have to learn their language. The Atruans are insular. They’ve rejected Common Tongue. Their political parties don’t align with the rest of the planet. They’re a strange people in some ways. It will be a difficult task.”
“I have an affinity for learning tongues,” Sennon replied. “I would enjoy the task.”
“Very well. You are dismissed from other tasks so that you can prepare for this mission. Thank you for volunteering.” Kivana took another deep breath. “That is all for now. I expect to have a conference with the Chief Councilor as well as the abári in Yezi’tra after our evening meal. I anticipate needing to travel tomorrow. You are dismissed. My Varkevanders, I will take you to the canteen.”
“Who are you?” Gaetan asked, joining Kivana, Moxara, Alyona and Tamryn. But it was Tamryn he was looking at. “I know all Çtaráni A’mara, but you come in here with our cloak and I don’t know you.”
“Tamryn Landry,” the young man replied. “I was born in Omrill, but I have no memory of it. My mother met my father there.”
“Tiva is your mother?” Gaetan asked.
Tamryn nodded.
“I remember her well. She came to us obviously pregnant with you. She became our head gardener and married the groundskeeper who attended your birth. I remember it because it was very strange. Our whole complex was in danger for awhile because of her ex-husband. Is your mother well? Do you have siblings?”
“She is doing well, thanks for asking,” Tamryn said stiffly. “My family are very happy in Ilim City these days.”
“Glad to hear it,” Gaetan replied. “I would have married your mother, but it was Zeno who swept her off her feet in his quiet way.”
“Let me show you our specialties here in Joton,” Kivana said, interrupting Gaetan and sensing that Tamryn was very uncomfortable. She would have to ask him later.
