~ Twelve-Spotted Skimmer ~
This is the 9th insect drawing/painting I am sharing in this set of 8" X 8" art panels that I created for the Burien Vision 20/20 Art Event in November 2017. This dragonfly is a Twelve-Spotted Skimmer. They are mostly black & white and are really awesome to see in-person. This one was drawn from a photograph. I remember that it seemed like it took FOREVER to draw in all the detail on the wings.
All of these panels were first drawn (freehand) with a fine-tip Sharpie, and then acrylic paint & iridescent acrylic inks were painted over the top. This was actually a method that I used to use when painting scenery. We would often ink-in the details on a drop (or other piece of scenery) and then would paint over it in thin acrylic washes. The lines that were drawn with Sharpie would show through the paint beautifully. Almost magically!
