Annabelle Creation Review (Blu-ray) - A scary prequel

Director David F. Sandberg came up with a pretty strong horror film a few years ago: The Conjuring. Soon the doll Annabelle got a spin-off from the film that was also pretty scary. And now there is the prequel that we have thoroughly tested in this Annabelle Creation Review!

In Annabelle: Creation we go a bit back in time compared to Annabelle from 2014. To be precise, we go to 1950 where a bus with orphans is in route to the house of former doll maker Samuel Mullins. He made his house available because otherwise the children and the nun, Sister Charlotte, could not go anywhere.

A merciful doll maker

A very nice gesture, but Samuel Mullens does not seem to be very friendly himself. He is always short and somewhat blunt to his guests and seems to be pretty absent. In addition, Samuel has clear rules for his guests. They may come anywhere except in two rooms.

The room where Samuel's wife is lying in bed and the room that once belonged to their deceased daughter Annabelle. Obviously this prohibition leads to curiosity among the children and that is the recipe for disaster. The old room of Annabelle is right next to the room of Janice and Linda, two of the orphan girls.

If Janice can not sleep one night and finds a note with 'looking me' at her door, she notices that the room of the deceased Annabelle is suddenly open. And then Annabelle: Creation goes in a whirlwind from some tame tension to big horror. The two children (and soon the others in the house) are startled by the entity that seems to be getting stronger and stronger.

As a viewer you will be carried away at that moment in the tension that Annabelle Creation has, while you already know what to look out for: the doll. But what happens when the doll has been in the picture all the time? Director David F. Sandberg still manages to haunt you in a shrewd way!

Changing quality of horror

The doll is often prominently in the picture, but it happens rarely that the real horror comes directly from here. So while you know what 'the threat' is, you have no idea what to expect. You also startle you a few times. Sandberg has managed to build a few original horror moments with the use of minimal elements.

That originality is further reflected in the way the director connected this spin off of The Conjuring with other elements from this franchise. For example, the nun (who according to the extra feature The Conjuring Universe will also get his own film) will pass and you will see references to The Crooked Man from The Conjuring 2. Unfortunately, not everything in the field of horror is great in Annabelle.

Besides the good horror moments, the film of over one and a half hours has a lot of cliché moments. Jumpscares are almost impossible, while there is sufficient opportunity for an easy scare moment in the film. Fortunately, these are not filled with running phantoms or the like. They did not make the film, not even in the Deleted Scenes feature on the Blu-ray.

But some moments are just a bit too long-winded so the horror moment comes from miles away. And thus the horror film loses its strength a bit. The story remains amusing because the tension is always present, but you will almost never crawl behind the couch of fear.

Know to convince from the first moment

Annabelle: Creation also remains interesting because the characters are set up very well. In this area, the film is one of the stronger films in the genre last year. The actors and especially you know how to convince in the first half of the film. Take, for example, the girl Janice.

She can not walk because she has ever had polio, is a bit pushed aside by her peers and is very vulnerable. This makes her so convincing that you really believe that the girl is an outsider due to her condition. Her only real friend in the house is just as convincing, but both ladies do not get it from Anthony LaPaglia who plays Samuel Mullins. He really puts down his role as a distant, broken man.

The acting is free from the strong horror for a large part of the conviction of the horror in Annabelle: Creation. This is also reflected in one of the extra features on the Blu-ray: Directing Annabelle and in the commentary of the director that can be switched on.

Conclusion

Annabelle: Creation is a film to see for sure, partly because of the strong acting. At least, if you like to scare a lot. Because the horror element is certainly well processed in this film, although there are also enough cliché moments present.

You see other scary moments coming in advance, which reduces the horror. But that should certainly not spoil the fun. Annabelle: Creation is a worthy addition to the Conjuring universe and is certainly worthy among all the other possessed Blu-rays in your closet.

The plus and minus points

✔ Strong story
✔ Good horror with minimal elements
✔ Acting work convincing from the beginning
✖ Some moments have been made too long
