To follow a training to witch, it may sound a bit dull. Who wants to play games outside of school in which you are still at school? In Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time, fortunately you do not have to follow subjects carefully, because the summer holidays are on their doorstep. Discover in this Little Witch Academia preview if the game knows how to enchant!
If you have aspirations with regard to flying on brooms and learning spells, then Luna Nova is the place to be . Harry Potter may have moved to Hogwarts from his stairwell, while in Little Witch Academia Akko dreams of going to Luna Nova from a young age with only one goal: to become as good a witch as her idol Shiny Chariot.
Little Witch Academia from A+ Games is derived from the eponymous animated series, where two films - Little Witch Academia and The Enchanted Parade - have come true and Netflix made a series last summer. Just like in the movies you follow the character Akko and her friends Sucy and Lotte. They discover a secret room called the Chamber of Horology in the school, with which they can manipulate time. As expected, this is wrong and the girls end up in a time loop, which means they have to discover how they come from.
Explore the world as Akko
Little Witch Academia only came out in Japan, but will be released next year on PlayStation 4 and PC in the West. Previously it was called The Witch of Time and the Seven Wonders, but the title has been renamed the shorter Chamber of Time. For the Little Witch Academia preview we could already go through part of the beginning and that turns Akko into trouble. She must report to the angry headmaster Holbrooke, after which it soon turns out that the world is semi-open, as far as possible in a 2D game.
You can, despite the 2D visuals and animations, go further away and come closer to discover other areas from which each level exists. With a fixed camera angle you can walk through the game world. Explore dark catacombs, snowy areas where the wind rushes and other locations while you can speak spells to defeat the strangest fantasy creatures.
Eventually you will have to find seven wonders, of which the Chamber of Time is only one. We do not know how this will turn out, because we have only been able to play for a short half an hour. It is to be hoped that the theme will not lead to endless repetition, because visiting the same locations every time because the day starts again, can quickly become dull. But that is certainly thought about!
Smooth control
You have all your hands full through the levels. The animations are not great and the depth is difficult to estimate because of the visual style. Regularly we missed the monsters with our spells or we could hardly walk around a rock or anything else. Little Witch Academia will not have to take the quick action, while fights still occur regularly.
The game has remained true to the story and the characters of the films. In addition to the three that you go on an adventure with, other well-known characters make their appearance. The same Japanese voice actors also participate in the Chamber of Time, so there is something to celebrate for those who are familiar with the franchise.
Preliminary Conclusion
The developer has clearly drawn inspiration from the anime and seems to stay true to it at first, which can only benefit the game. Yet the game is not for everyone and the animations and visuals sometimes work a bit against. Unfortunately no room for us to manipulate and rinse the time! To get a good picture of Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time we will have to see more.
