Doom VFR Review - The demon invasion on Mars continues, now in virtual reality

Over the past few months, Bethesda has proven how committed they are to support as many platforms as possible. The Elder Scrolls Q: Skyrim and Doom were transferred to the Nintendo Switch and now both games have also been transferred to be played in virtual reality. In contrast to Skyrim, Doom VFR is not the same game as the original from 2016. Here you do not play as the taciturn Doom Guy, but you play a worker from the Mars space station that dies at the beginning of the demon invasion. Now, in ghost form, he takes some combat armor to demolish the demons.

In spite of the other set-up, the experience itself is not very different from that of 2016. Once again, you make your way through corridors in search of colored keys while demons regularly pop up from 'portals'. What does change is the switch to virtual reality, which immediately impresses us with the quality of the graphics. We do not know if it retains the same quality as the original, but it is beyond dispute that Doom VFR looks great - something that can not be said about all other versions. The eye for detail in the environments and the enemies is fantastic, even with the depth that virtual reality offers and we have not seen 'framedrops' anywhere. We played on the PlayStation 4 Pro, so we are not sure if this is also the case with a normal PS4.

However, the biggest difference is the new control system. Basically, there are three ways to play Doom VFR : with two Move controllers, PS Aim or DualShock 4. Of the three, the classic controller felt the best option for us, probably due to the hectic setup of the Doom gameplay. Even in its current state, compared to the original game, Doom VFR requires the necessary movement and you have to constantly watch every direction, something that is not particularly easy in virtual reality. With the DualShock 4, however, you can choose from a variety of options and customize the gameplay experience.

Doom VFR works as standardwith a mix of teleportation and fixed turning at fixed angles. Instead of moving your character, as you normally do with the left analog stick, you use a "teleporter" assigned to L2 - which shows you where you are pointing. How do you point to something? With your head. The mechanisms of movement are also linked to the execution 'kills'. If the demons are numb, like in the 2016 game, you can execute them with a chilling move, but in this case you have to teleport. You aim the teleporting on the stunned monster and activate it, after which your opponent is pulverized. This operating system lets you run the camera with the four-point push buttons, which makes the camera rotate horizontally and at fixed angles.

Everyone who feels brave can also opt for a more traditional control, with the movement control on the left analog stick and moving the camera on the right (your head still only controls vertical movements). This setup is very true to traditional control, but we have to warn you: it can easily make you feel nauseous. We played in this way for about an hour and felt dizzy and had a headache after that session. Fortunately, there are also several settings available here, where you can adjust the speed of the rotation and the rotation angles.

Now the big question is of course: is Doom VFR worth the trouble? Well, it can continue... but after the first impact of virtual reality, we actually hoped that the experience would have stayed closer to the original. Doom from 2016 played like a tit and the gameplay is precisely its strength. It is an extremely hectic and entertaining first-person shooter, but Doom VFR leads the sacrifices it makes for virtual reality. If you are a fan of Doom and virtual reality it is worth considering for 30 euros, but we do not recommend the game wholeheartedly - unlike the original.

āœ” One of the best looking PSVR games; new experience designed for virtual reality; supports three control options...
āœ– ...but none of these works perfectly; Doom VFR play as the normal game makes you probably nauseous
