Gear Club Unlimited Review - The racing game for the Switch?

gearclubunlimited2-860x484.jpg

Each platform has its own racing game: Forza on the Xbox, Gran Turismo on the PlayStation and Mario Kart on Nintendo. Yet the latter is completely different in tone from the previous two franchises. Gear Club Unlimited tries to bring the tone of Forza and Gran Turismo to the Switch. If that works, you can read in the Gear Club Unlimited review.

Gear Club Unlimited does not bother about it right from the start: you see a gigantic world map with racing locations, several people who indicate that you have to choose immediately which car you want and a small part of your garage that is clearly going to be bigger. You are therefore immediately thrown into the deep and that can be frightening. Fortunately the title accompanies you quietly along its many aspects.

Fast, faster, fastest

Racing is of course the core aspect of Gear Club Unlimited and this element generally works well. You have, whether in handheld mode or docked mode, the feeling that you drive the car decently. You drive from a first-person view or something from behind the car and just like with Forza you see a line that indicates whether you are approaching a curve well or going too fast and need to slow down.

There is also a big downside to Gear Club Unlimited. In the first races, and with an okay car, you will not have too much trouble with braking and good bends. But as you play more and unlock faster vehicles, you notice that your brakes do not always work well. You then press your brake button, but it may take a while before your car slows down. And then you sometimes bang against a wall.

With those faster cars, other parts of Gear Club Unlimited are starting to stand out. If you quickly go through the various levels, you sometimes experience frame drops , but this will not be too obvious. What then stands out is the amount of environments you see, since they often look the same. The graphics are very strong for the Switch, but after a good eighty races you have seen almost all the dunes, mountains and beaches in the game.

A lot of content

This does not mean that the game can be completed in 80 races, because you will be driving a lot of laps before you see the end of the campaign. Gear Club Unlimited also knows how to do this in a good way. The races are never longer than two rounds and thus last a maximum of two minutes, which is the perfect time for a short game session.

Gear Club Unlimited also offers more than enough content, because apart from the races you still have all kinds of garages at your disposal. One for your tires, one for spraying your car and a whole zipper of adaptation places for your motorcycle and other aspects. During your races you earn money by finishing first and that you use for upgrading your vehicle.

Customizing your car is surprisingly profound and therefore belongs to one of the highlights of Gear Club Unlimited. Do not expect a range of cars such as Forza and Gran Turismo, but the title offers more than enough variety with a good 30 to 40 cars, so you can develop a good collection.

Difficult!

Something that unfortunately has very little variation, is the difficulty. Gear Club Unlimited only offers you three difficulty levels with 'medium' as entry level. With this level of difficulty you will not have too much trouble and in no time at all - we are talking about two races - you want something more challenging.

It is unfortunate that the gap between 'medium' and 'hard' is very large and that the differences between the AI are also enormous. Because of the seven opponents you race against, two are always much faster than the rest. At your entry level this does not matter much, because you can retrieve them pretty quickly, but you can hardly catch up on the most difficult degree. Even with your fastest car they will stay with you for a long time and become a witch ride to pass them.

You will experience witch rides in Gear Club Unlimited more often and the title also gives you the choice to race on screen with three others. Unfortunately, the racer does not contain an online multiplayer, which is a big loss. We have already seen that Nintendo currently has a lot to offer online and racing against other players was a good addition.

Gear Club Unlimited Review - Falls between shore and ship

Now Gear Club Unlimited remains a moderate racer with good graphics for the Switch. The tone of Forza and Gran Turismo is brought to the Switch somewhat, but you do not know how to handle it as well as the other series do. The braking does not really work, you often see the same environments and due to the limited choice of difficulty you sometimes fall between the ship. Then an in-depth upgrade system can not save the lot.

The plus and minus points

✔ Many upgrades possible
✔ Good graphics
✔ Drive away...
✖ ...but brakes do not work
✖ Often the same environments
✖ Few choice from difficulty opponent
