Destiny 2 Curse of Osiris Review - Is this all?

Destiny is far from finished yet, but already very beautiful. Bungie is working hard in the coming weeks and months to make the experience for players even better. Curse of Osiris, the first paying extension, is the first test. A success? You can read this in this Destiny 2 Curse or Osiris review.

Destiny 2 felt like a liberation for everyone. The mistakes that the first part made during the launch were learned. Not a half-baked story, but a complete and epic adventure. No repetitive misses and events, but more variety and challenge.

Not a soulless social hub, but a vibrant world where you would like to walk around. Not for nothing were game journalists and players unanimous: Bungie could not have done better with this sequel.

Curse must turn tide

It is truly amazing how that positive image has been able to tilt in recent weeks. Suddenly there was strong criticism from the supporters: Destiny 2 is not very varied and falls as you play it, even in repetition. Environments are recycled nicely and some enemies often return. Yet the biggest problem is in a different corner: there is no more challenge. Especially in the endgame, if you have gathered enough light together, Destiny 2 will sometimes be too easy.

Curse of Osiris , the first of the two planned expansions, has to change that, with a large number of additions and improvements. The return of Heroïc Strikes - crazy enough absent in the original game - is one of the big trump cards, as is the expansion of the raids, according to many players the main reason to keep playing Destiny 2. The players who have been pulled out for a while must be seduced with Curse or Osiris with a promising new planet.

Travel through time

This planet, the desert-like Mercury, forms the scene of a new story that - as the game title implies - revolves around Osiris. He is one of the most powerful Guardians of all time, a legendary Warlock and also the mentor of Ikora. She gives you the mission to find Osiris as soon as possible. Stories are that he was injured during a confrontation with the Vex. This well-known, robotic enemy plays an important role in Curse or Osiris .

On the planet Mercury they have opened a portal - the Infinite Forest - with which they can travel through time and throw the future of the Guardians and humanity upside down. By traveling through time on Mercury yourself, you must put an end to their nefarious plans. This quest, which takes about two hours, takes you through the desert-like landscapes of Mercury, but when you travel through time you also end up in the old Mercury, when colorful valleys and a lively flora and fauna determined the landscape.

A big legend

Bungie introduces the story again in a spectacular way, with flashy cutscenes and impressive voice-acting, but it does not take long for everything when a house of cards collapses. You do not feel involved in the story for a moment and the urgency of your mission is never really clear. Osiris is seen as a legendary Guardian, someone with personality and character, but in the story little of it ends up. Your meeting with him is short-lived and makes anything but impressive.

Moreover, the road to the Vex final boss is extremely short-lived. After only two hours you stand in front of the robotic sledgehammer, and even this confrontation falls completely into the water due to a lack of challenge. Every player who is at level twenty and has collected sufficient Light over the months, rushes through the missions without too much effort. Enemies offer little resistance, and some missions are over before you realize it. All the while it feels as if Bungie has rattled off the campaign out of laziness.

Vivid flora and fauna

And that is a shame, because with Mercury - and the accompanying Infinite Forest - Bungie has a beautiful world in which players can experience great adventures. Especially the Infinite Forest, where the Guardians on Mercury travel through time, is basically a great concept. It is truly wonderful to see the contrast between the old Mercury, full of lovely valleys and lively flora and fauna, and the current Mercury, where sand predominates and you have to look very well to see a bit of life somewhere.

The potential of Infinite Forest is certainly present, but is hardly used in Curse or Osiris. Due to the extremely short campaign you will not get much of it, and even after playing the story there are only three Adventures (short missions in which background of Destiny is highlighted) in which you can return here. The purpose of these missions is that the road to the final destination must be different every time, but that promised variation is relatively unheard of. Play the Adventures a few times, and you will see that there is actually little difference. Here, too, Bungie proves once again that it is the master in the recycling of content.

Comeback

Much more interesting is the addition - or actually the return - of Heroic Strikes, the more challenging variants on the normal strikes, which were missing out on the frustration of players in the original game. All existing strikes in Destiny 2 are now equipped with a difficult variant, plus two new ones have been added that play on Mercury. These are completely new, however, as the environments and also the bosses were already in the campaign. Quite lazy, but fortunately they offer enough challenge here.

Unlike the first expansion of the original Destiny, Curse of Osiris does not introduce a complete new raid, but extends the existing Leviathan Raid. This new layer goes through life as Eater of Worlds, and is many times shorter than a normal raid. Is this a shame? No! Eater of the Worlds is perhaps the best that Curse of Osiris has to offer, with fun puzzles, epic battles and beautiful environments.

What else does the expansion offer?

In addition to the story and the Strikes, the Crucible, the competitive multiplayer in Destiny, has also received new content. This time in the form of new maps. The small-scale 'Pacifica' on the planet Titan will inevitably take care of many close combats, while Radiant Cliffs, which takes place in the Infinite Forest, is much more open and bigger and therefore ideal for snipers. A new mode did not look out of place in Curse or Osiris, but unfortunately it shines through absence.

Furthermore, Curse of Osiris mainly does what an expansion should do: it adds a lot of new weapons and armor, raises the levelcap to 25 and the Light level to 335 and introduces on Mercury a brand new hub, The Lighthouse, where quests can be accepted and players can meet each other. This is a lot smaller than the other social areas in Destiny 2 and that's fine. At a certain point you did have to walk back and forth to npc's.

Destiny 2 Curse of Osiris review - is disappointing

Destiny 2 is and remains a beautiful and exciting shooter, but Curse of Osiris, the first paying expander, is a big disappointment. The story is very disappointing because of the short duration and lack of challenge and the potential of the beautiful new planet Mercury is hardly used. It is to be hoped that the next expansion will equal the level of The Taken King, because Bungie - especially with the price of 20 euros in mind - makes it very easy.

The plus and minus points

✔ Shooting remains intense and spectacular
✔ Mercury is a beautiful new planet
✔ Long-awaited return Heroic Strikes
✖ Short and easy campaign
✖ A defective story
✖ Content recycled easily
✖ Too expensive

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
