When the concept of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle leaked, I did not know what to expect. A crossover between Mario's beloved characters and Ubisoft's hated Rabbids could only get terrible, right? After the official unveiling at E3 2017 it was finally clear that the game was going to be a turn-based tactical rpg in the style of XCOM. As a fan of XCOM, Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics, my interest was aroused.

Rinse through to the end of 2017 and I can not say anything other than that Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was the surprise of the year for me. From illogical concept to fifth in the top 10 best-selling Switch titles of the year - behind the big names of Nintendo itself. Publisher Ubisoft and director Davide Soliani deserve more than just a pat on the back. They deserve a standing ovation, because Nintendo itself could not have done better.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is exactly what you would expect if the Japanese game developer brought a tactical rpg to the market. The game is bursting with colorful environments and is full of funny moments, but also contains game elements that are easy to understand for everyone. And although the story may not be extremely special, Ubisoft has managed to make something nice from the blood-rending Rabbids. Because of a bizarre accident, their world clashes with Mario's and they inherit certain characteristics of the mustachioed Nintendo mascot and his friends. This results in hilarious moments when you unlock new characters. It also proves that it does not matter in what situations Mario is placed, it actually works almost always.
Freedom, variety and above all a lot of fun
In terms of gameplay Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is accessible, but more layered than you might think. By giving you the choice with whom you want to move, where you want to have characters on the playing field or when you want to perform an action, there is a lot of depth. Every situation can be tackled in different ways and it is up to you to find the most effective. During combat, for example, you take into account the special powers of your characters. Mario must (unfortunately) always come along and can only be accompanied by one other character from personal circle of friends. In addition, at least one Rabbid must participate.
Fortunately, each character has a unique role and skills that fit within that role. This variation is also among the enemies, of which new and unexpected versions appear in every new Kingdom. The weapons you and your opponents use also have certain elements that can give you extra benefits and turn full fights. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle may be a bit simple for experienced players of tactical RPGs, but more accessible to newcomers to the genre. Those who want a little extra challenge can go back into a Kingdom after each boss to complete additional missions. These are a lot trickier than the levels you play in the main story, tricky enough to sweat a lot of tacticians.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle shows that not only Nintendo knows how to make Nintendo games. The game is an ode to the game developer and a sign that hopefully the Japanese superpower will finally deal with its intellectual property. My hope for 2018 is that we get another surprise on Nintendo Switch. Mario + Rabbids made my 2017 just that little bit nicer. And that in a year full of strong games.
