It's so exciting and scary. This time we could play the game again with a much longer playing time. This game will be very interesting for PlayStation VR.
So many choices
As we mentioned earlier, the game takes place in an institution where you were admitted as a patient. You have a lot of problems between your ears and by staying here, you hope that everything will be alright. The Inpatient would not be The Inpatient if it comes with a lot of nightmares and complications. At the beginning of the game you get the chance to learn the control at a quiet pace and that is the simple principle of using both Move controllers to get ahead. You use the left Move to move forward and the right Move serves as a means - by swiping - to look in all directions. You will also occasionally have to pick up objects to study or use, which also goes with the Move controller.
Along the way, you will be presented with different choices in the conversations, as you are used to from Until Dawn. This will affect the course of the story. The effects of this we have actually been able to notice very little in our play session, but that is mainly because we have not played it for hours. In Until Dawn, however, you received feedback immediately after your choice on your chosen answer in a conversation. This gave you some idea what influence your choices had. In The Inpatient we have not been able to experience that properly, so perhaps it all has a little more effect in the long term. By the way, some of the choices you make are occasionally emphasized with the famous butterflies from Until Dawn, but for now it remains to be seen how big the effects are.
Good and scary atmosphere
Of course, the concept of making choices immediately invites you to play the game more often, so that you really start to notice the differences in conversations. This will not be a punishment, because the conversations are wonderful written and that in a way that you are always curious about what else will come. At a certain moment you will either stay in your cell, as the employees call it, accompanied by a fellow patient. This ensures that the atmosphere and the developments in the story are extra printed. What we want to say is that everything becomes a lot more interesting the moment your new friend moves into your room.
What in the end is a punishment to experience several times with multiple playthroughs, are the dreams you will imagine. Because not all wires in your head are properly tied, you will have dreams that are presented as nightmares. For example, my colleague Danny still has heart problems after his first encounter with The Inpatient. This is partly due to the atmosphere that is unprecedented for a horror game in VR. The excitement and the mysterious are put down very well and that coupled with a VR experience in which you can roam freely, ensures that the tension is increased once again. Impressive, that without a doubt.
Old familiar atmosphere
Also in this part of the game - free walking around - you can make choices, for example of how you move through the corridors of the institution into a nightmare. This will undoubtedly have an influence on the story, but unfortunately we can now say very little about it. Paired with hallucinations and flashbacks, the scariest parts we played are also the most interesting. However, we should note that the tension is most often built up by anticipating jump scares. That is the case in most horror games, all in VR, so that is probably predictable. Nevertheless, we hope that the developer has devised more creative ways to scare you into the game. Making a VR horror game scary by using only jump scares will quickly lose its charm and that would be a shame.
Apart from that we can not deny that the atmosphere is very good. We also have to say that if you play the game and you have played Until Dawn, it fits very well. The style, the conversations and the mysterious will recognize fans of Until Dawn as they venture to The Inpatient. That is a very strong point, since the game functions as a sort of prequel on Until Dawn and that makes us extra excited to go through the game, especially with the scary atmosphere that hangs in it. The world that Supermassive Games has created with Until Dawn and now The Inpatient, is one that we certainly want to discover more about.
Preliminary conclusion
All in all, we are very positive about The Inpatient. The atmosphere is of an unprecedented level, which is partly due to virtual reality, the characters and the dialogues. The institution is an extremely creepy environment where you can get well intimidated as a player. This makes it as a total picture one of the most interesting VR games that will come out in 2018. The only thing we are still curious about is how the choices in the conversations will influence the story. That is a matter of waiting, but we hope that it eventually results in a situation where we have to attract several clean diapers for the various playthroughs.
Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
