After more than half a year in Mexico City, the time had finally come - I travelled by metro in Mexico's capital for the first time. My destination was the chaotic but very interesting city centre, of which I had seen way too little so far. I would like to share my impressions of this trip with you today in this post.
Nach insgesamt über einem halben Jahr in Mexico City war es neulich endlich soweit – ich bin das erste Mal mit der U-Bahn in Mexiko's Hauptstadt unterwegs gewesen. Ziel war das chaotische, doch sehr interessante Stadtzentrum, von dem ich bisher viel zu wenig gesehen hatte. Meine Eindrücke von diesem Ausflug möchte ich euch heute in diesem Beitrag erzählen.
A journey on the metro in Mexico City currently costs just five pesos, or the equivalent of 28 cents, and is usually much quicker than travelling by car on the chronically traffic jammed roads. And indeed, from Copilco station near Coyoacan, it took less than half an hour for my girlfriend and me to reach the city's main square - also known as the Zocalo. The reason for our trip was to visit the Casa Corregidor, which we were planning to rent for an event. After visiting the building with its impressive inner courtyard, we walked through the bustling streets of the centre to the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Gerade einmal fünf Pesos oder umgerechnet 28 Cent kostet eine Fahrt mit der Metro in Mexiko-Stadt aktuell und man ist meistens wesentlich schneller, als mit dem Auto auf den chronisch verstopften Straßen. Und tatsächlich – von der Station Copilco in der Nähe von Coyoacan dauerte es weniger als eine halbe Stude, bis meine Freundin und ich den Hauptplatz der Stadt – auch Zocalo genannt – erreichten. Grund für unseren Ausflug war die Besichtigung der Casa Corregidor, die wir eventuell für eine Veranstaltung mieten wollten. Nach der Besichtigung des Gebäudes mit seinem imposanten Innenhof, spazierten wir die belebten Straßen des Zentrums bis zum Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Here we marvelled at the many blooming and fragrant jacaranda trees that can currently be found on every street corner in the city. After a short time, we reached one of the city's most interesting metro stations. The entrance is a copy of the classic entrances to metro stations in Paris. However, an artistically designed staircase inside is also well worth seeing. Unfortunately, the trains themselves are often overcrowded and anything but modern. Due to numerous accidents and safety concerns, the metro in Mexico City does not enjoy the best reputation. Another negative thing I noticed was that the trains only stop very briefly and the doors are mercilessly closed after a few seconds, even if not all passengers have entered and left the vehicle. For these reasons, I would recommend travelling on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in order to enjoy a reasonably stress-free journey without the crowds.
Hier bewunderten wir die vielen, blühenden und duftenden Jacaranda-Bäume, die man aktuell an jeder Straßenecke der Stadt findet. Nach kurzer Zeit erreichten wir eine der interessantesten Metro-Stationen der Stadt. Der Eingang ist eine Kopie der klassischen Eingänge der Metro-Stationen in Paris. Doch auch eine kunstvoll gestaltete Treppe im inneren ist mehr als sehenswert. Leider sind die Züge selbst oft überfüllt und alles andere als modern. Aufgrund von zahlreichen Unfällen und Sicherheitsbedenken genießt die U-Bahn in Mexico City auch nicht den allerbesten Ruf. Was mir ebenfalls negativ auffiel: Die Züge halten nur sehr kurz und die Türen werden nach wenigen Sekunden gnadenlos geschlossen, auch wenn noch nicht alle Fahrgäste ein- und ausgestigen sind. Ich würde euch aus diesen Gründen empfehlen, werktags zwischen 09 und 14 Uhr zu fahren, um einigermaßen stressfrei und ohne Menschenmassen zu reisen.
We got off again at the Zocalo and looked at the miniature versions of the main square from different eras that can be found in the metro station. I then saw the cathedral from the east side for the first time and was also able to inspect the remains of the Templo Mayor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was one of the most important temples of the Aztecs. Our journey then took us further north. At some point, the street scenery became increasingly unkempt and even more chaotic. We were already close to the Tepito neighbourhood, which has a dubious reputation, when we turned back.
Wir stiegen erneut am Zocalo aus und sahen uns die Miniatur-Versionen des Hauptplatzes aus verschiedenen Epochen an, die man in der Metro-Station findet. Danach sah ich die Kathedrale zum ersten Mal von der Ostseite und konnte dort auch die Überreste des zum UNESCO-Weltkulturebe gehörenden Templo Mayor besichtigen. Es handelte sich dabei um einen der wichtigsten Tempel der Azteken. Anschließend führte uns unser Weg weiter nach Norden. Irgendwann wurde das Straßenbild immer ungepflegter und noch chaotischer. Wir befanden uns bereits in der Nähe des Viertels Tepito, das einen zweifelhaften Ruf genießt, als wir wieder umkehrten.
The centre of Mexico City is huge - it's easy to get lost and no matter which way you walk, the crowds in the streets don't get any smaller. Here you experience pure sensory overload. The same applies to the metro, but I think you should experience both to get to know this side of the metropolis, far away from the touristy and fancy neighbourhoods. It's rarely stress-free, but the many sights, markets, restaurants and shops to explore make up for it.
Das Zentrum von Mexiko-Stadt ist riesig – man kann sich darin schnell verlaufen und egal in welche Richtung man spaziert, die Menschenmassen in den Straßen werden nicht weniger. Hier erlebt man Reizüberflutung pur. Ähnliches gilt für die Metro, doch ich finde, man muss beides mal erlebt haben, um auch diese Facette der Metropole, fernab der touristischen und gehobenen Stadtteile, kennenzulernen. Das ist selten stressfrei, doch die vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten, Märkte, Restaurants und Läden, die es zu erkunden gibt, entschädigen für vieles.
