Today, I have the pleasure of sharing with you one of the portraits I drew for the documentary film: The Last Terracotta Artisans, which is a project funded by the Thanh Ha Terracotta Park and Museum in Hoi An City, Quang Nam province, Vietnam.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Duoc is a 87-year-old woman. She is the oldest artisan in the village with 75 years of making pottery. She has made great contributions to keep the traditional pottery in Thanh Ha village.
She said in the interview:
"500 years ago, our ancestor from Thanh Hoa, Nghe An went to the south and chose Thanh Ha as the place to start the village and starting a career in pottery. Thanh Ha pottery has been sold in Hoi An market and many other markets. About 60-70 years ago in the village there were boats and pottery traders for selling to other provinces.”
Here are some pictures showing the process of creating the scribble style drawing of Mrs. Chien.
My first step was to capture the layout and key reference points of her portrait.
Then I worked on the background showing her pottery at her home, which is also her workplace.
I then added more details to her face, capturing the highlights from the light and areas of shadow to give more depth. And here is the final scribble drawing of Mrs.Chien, each shade is made up of many scribbles, which are free flowing.
