For those just seeing this series, I am building a new NAS (Network Attached Storage) build with 60TB of space for under $1,700 USD. I recommend starting at the beginning if you haven't seen the previous posts.
Power Supply Installation
As mentioned previously, I already had this power supply on hand brand new in the box. I have a couple of these not even opened from when I was mining Ethereum. I was planning on returning them but I got them so cheap I could sell them for more or use them if the need arises.
The power supply is a bronze rated 850W, which is more than enough to power 15 HHD, 2 SSD, 2 Xeon 2690, and all the fans.
The supply is a modular supply, so we will need cables for everything we need to hook up. Luckily, they are all included.
Installation is pretty easy, just four screws in the back like any other case. Installation only took a few minutes, although I had difficulty lining up the screw holes as the power supply needs to be held up in the air a few mm to line up.
Cabling is going to be a nightmare, I can see it now. I am also going to have to modify the SATA power cables so I have 5 connectors instead of 4. This will allow me to use one power line per drive cage. I can't really do the cable until I have the drives in so I can adjust the length to match the drive spacing.
I also have received the MB, Memory, SAS Card, 10GBit Nic. I am only currently waiting for the HD and CPUs. Hopefully, I should receive them today or tomorrow. I can't do anything else until they arrive.
Lunch
Sorry, no lunch today. Although I am craving some soup for some reason.
