Some quotes on Travels/Travelling – all very true. Unfortunately I am not adventurous, and that makes me a poor traveller. If only I could appreciate the benefits of travels stated in these quotes, I would have travelled more. But I am not excited about travelling, nor am I very interested or curious about what’s out there. If anything, I relate more to the first two quotes.
Travelling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. - Cesare Pavese
Travelling, you realize that differences are lost: each city takes to resembling all cities, places exchange their form, order, distances, a shapeless dust cloud invades the continents. - Italo Calvino
Travel is a means of conquering space and time. - Unknown
To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries. - Aldous Huxley
To travel is to live. - Hans Christian Andersen
Travel is intensified living – maximum thrills per minute and one of the last great sources of legal adventure. Travel is freedom. It's recess, and we need it. - Rick Steves
Modern travel is like fast food: short, sharp incursions that do not weave a spell. In our age, tourism has made the planet into a uniform spectacle, and it has made us perpetual strangers wandering through an imitation of an imitation of a place we once wanted to go. - Lawrence Osborne
Voyaging great distances – through forests, from island to island, across plains and into the mountains – is all about finding ourselves. - Tim Lebbon
Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends. - Maya Angelou
Those who visit foreign nations, but who associate only with their own countrymen, change their climate, but not their customs; they return home with travelled bodies, but untravelled minds. - Charles Caleb Colton
To get away from one's working environment is, in a sense, to get away from one's self; and this is often the chief advantage of travel and change. - Charles Horton Cooley
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime. - Mark Twain
Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else – above all, a travel bureau – arrange everything before-hand? - Richard Aldington
Adventurous travel is like a virus for many people ... Once they've been to some far-away destination completely on their own ... it's often as if a switch has been flipped. They've caught the travel bug, and from that moment on they are constantly thinking about their next trip. - Barry Kooijmans
All the pathos and irony of leaving one’s youth behind is thus implicit in every joyous moment of travel: one knows that the first joy can never be recovered, and the wise traveller learns not to repeat successes but tries new places all the time. - Paul Fussell
New situations inspire new thoughts. Here is the benefit of travelling, much more than in mere sight-seeing. We lose ourselves in the streets of our own city, and go abroad to find ourselves. - Christian Nestell Bovee
