Photo session at Somersby Falls in the Brisbane Water National Park, NSW, Australia

My friend Frank is now back to London from his very short stay in Australia. It has been amazing being able to go for a photoshoot with him again after almost 6 years. We used to do it almost every week and go to Ealing and Hampshire House Photographic Society. A lot of great memories from that time when I was a keen photographer. But a lot of things have changed and with my almost broken Nikon D300, I've lost interest in Photography and went for fishing, worm farming and gardening which has the advantage of bringing fresh food back home.

The following series of photographs have been taken when Frank was still with us. He was using a high end Fuji camera and I was using, as usual, an iPhone 8 Plus with the editing done on the phone using the Snapseed app.

The Somersby Falls are just 20 minutes away from my place. They are part of the Brisbane Water National Park. The parking fee is of $8.00 as of today. Near the car park is a picnic area with tables and BBQ. But I'd rather bring a towel and go eat near the falls, the sound of water is so relaxing. Hear it for yourself from my little footage: Relaxing at Somersby Falls, NSW, Australia.

Here's Frank with his pro equipment:

As he was taking his time with the first waterfall, I went around looking for some macro photography subjects but the iPhone 8 Plus lens was not ideal for macro shots (I've just invested in an Olloclip Pro Macro Set, so will try something soon) but I got this decent one:

A lizard (not sure what type he is, maybe a Water Dragon?) was spooked by my steps and ran away on a branch. I managed to get close enough for this shot:

We then walk all the way to the bottom and started our way back up following the water, climbing the side of the waterfalls and taking shot each time.

It's really an amazing place, even if this time the amount of water was not enough to create some dramatic effect, I should come back after a medium size rainy season. Before starting our way back up, we took some portraits, here's Frank:

Another close-up shot of some moss on a trunk:

And as I was walking around while Frank was taking his shots, I saw this leaf on the ground and loved the image it created:

The next waterfall on our way back up was very promising as the water was flowing down much wider than the bottom one.

When taking a photograph, always think of trying different composition, getting closer, changing angle etc... You might get some better shot. In the following photograph, I've tried closer and cropped the final image to square ratio.

Then, I moved to the side and tried from another angle:

The next fall is interesting, the water was flowing only in a narrow area and people are using it as a shower. You would see them in swimsuit having fun under the falling water. I'll be back next summer.

Another shot of the same waterfall from another angle and using trees (left), ferns (right) and moss (bottom) to frame the picture. It also gives a kind of zooming effect:

Finally, the last one (at least for us) has a lot of potential, I can imagine how dramatic it would be if there was more water falling down:

I hope you have enjoyed looking at these photographs as much as I had taking them. Being taken from an iPhone they look good on a screen but won't be as amazing printed big. But it's still fun and you can travel ultra-light.
