Attractions of Dalat: #21 Lam Ty Ni Pagoda

The Lam Ty Ni Pagoda is one of the stranger attractions that you are likely to encounter on your visit to this mountain city. This is the home of Mr Thay Vien Thuc, a strange and remarkable monk. Often known as the crazy monk, Thuc learned English, French, Khmer, and Thai at Dalat University. He has lived here for over 35 years and has built gardens in different styles including a Japanese garden complete with a small bridge. He also bui;t the temple itself and much of the wooden furniture.

The main attraction here apart from Mr Thus himself, is the large collection of artwork that he has created. It is estimated that he has created in excess of 100,000 original works and there are literally thousands on show here. He charges just $1.00 to do an instant painting for you, so it is safe to say that he has done alright for himself.

Surrounded by myths he carries on regardless. Untrue rumours of his death did little to stop the legend growing. There is a constant flow of visitors to see him and at times the doors will be locked, purely to give hm time to just eat. It is close to the Crazy House and only 500 metres north of the Pasteur Institute.
