Attractions of Dalat: #24 The Golden Buddha of Thien Vien Van Hanh

The huge 79 feet tall golden statue of the Buddha is the biggest attraction of the Thien Vien Van Hanh Monastery. The monastery draws visitors and adherents from all over the country and beyond. The statue sits on a small hill and dominates the landscape here. Seated in the traditional lotus position, it is an amazing sight. This position is also known as the Amithabha Buddha, which means “boundless light.”

The lotus flower is, of course, the national flower of Vietnam, so more often than not, statues of the Buddha are in this position. This is a place for tranquil contemplation though tourists do come simply to take photographs. Admission is free, something that is getting more rare in Vietnam these days.

This attraction is quite easy to find. It is at 39 Phu Dong Thien Vuong in the city itself. It is but a few minutes from Dalat Market and on the road that leads out the the Love Valley. You will clearly see the statue as you approach. In addition to the huge golden buddha there are others, including a rather unique reclining statue as well.
