Sometimes called also known as Son Trai Church, Cam Ly Church is a religious site that serves mainly ethnic minorities to the west of Dalat. In addition to being a working church, Cam Ly Church has also developed into an interesting tourist attraction. The unusual architecture draws people from all over the country.
Built between 1960 and 1968 by private contractor Nguyen Thanh Ho, it was ordained under the auspices of a French priest Father Boutary, who had a long association with the native K'Ho minority people.
The church is designed in the style of traditional ethnic minorities of the CentralHighlands. The roof is of Rong style. The structure represents a strange mix of French and traditional architecture. It covers an area of over 300 metres, of which two thirds is given over to the congregational place of worship.
The roof stands 17 metres high and represents arrows firing heavenwards. It is also said to resemble a hammer. Strangely these weapons of the ethnic tribes are seen as religious artefacts. The stone walls are over a metre thick in places and the stained glass here was imported from France.
