You have Facebook to thank for this one today - I finally got in touch with an old friend of mine (25 years ago) this past week and she introduced me to one of the parodies today - which is where this came from.
I was vaguely aware of the original song - which isn't very exciting to me - it's not really my style and I don't find the lyrics very inspiring. Yet, the very style of music makes it very parody-able.
Original
Hollaback Girl - by Gwen Stefani
Definitely for the cheerleaders out there. I like the different scenes/outfits - makes it fun. But I'm definitely not for this style of music.
I had a couple of covers that I really enjoyed today.
Hollaback Girl - presented by Cimorelli
The guys won me over instantly with their precise accompaniment (though I do have to wonder how many bruises resulted in this!) The girls have excellent voices and really do this song justice. In all, I think it's well-presented, though I would have preferred the bloopers either shorter or as a separate presentation (knowing the YouTube 80% rule - they may miss out due to this.)
This one is a very different style - making it a totally new song.
Hollaback Girl - presented by Postmodern Jukebox
I just love the big band sounds of this awesome group. I found them awhile ago, but haven't been listening recently (need to correct this.) The vocal quality is excellent, making almost any song new and fresh with their own style. They are totally worth a listen.
Our final cover today had me in stitches!
Hollaback Girl - presented by Covers No One Asked For
Okay. Take the original (with language) ... now sing it as "an auditioning musical theater soprano." The result = hilarious! But her vocal quality is excellent, the score great... Another new song, really. Worth a listen (only 96 views over 4 months!)
On to the parodies...
Junk Food Snack Girl - presented by Janet Lee and the University of Illinois nursing students
These ladies do an excellent job of mimicking the original video while giving an excellent reminder to watch what we eat. Their vocals are good as well and the lyrics good fun.
WTF selection of the day
Curry-N-Rice Girl - presented by gr8indianbear
Take this one with a huge grain of, er, rice! These guys are (well, in 2011, anyway) looking for women, but no one has told them that they're far too picky! But it's a fun piece that had me laughing - so it's worth a watch (just turn down your volume a bit as it's pretty loud compared to the others.)
Today's Finale!!!
Black Death - presented by historyteachers
Thank you, Katie, for mentioning this one!
This is very educational, but still very well done. I'll be making this one mandatory for my girls as they get older, that's for sure!
Two trivia points that were not covered...
1666, England - the great fire of London wiped out most of the rats and ended the Plague there.
1349, Norway - Norway had nearly escaped the Plague - until an infested ship left England. All hands died, and the ghost ship landed on the coast of Norway - thus killing 1/3 of the population on the plague's journey to Russia.
That's it for today! I hope you had as much fun as I did!
As usual, I'm simply sharing YouTube videos on a theme, all rights remain with the original.
